Project STRIVE
STRIVE is an acronym for Science Teachers Research Involvement for Vital Education. The Arkansas STRIVE program places middle, junior high, and senior high school science, math, and computer teachers into summer research positions in industries, businesses, government agencies, universities, research facilities, and nonprofit organizations.
The purpose of the program is to provide teachers with hands-on, real-world research experiences that expand their scientific and technological knowledge. Teachers develop inquiry-based and problem-based lessons from their summer research experiences that they can use in their classes.
The program is eight-weeks long and ran from June 4-July 27, 2001. Teachers receive a stipend of $4400 and travel monies if they must commute long distances to their research site. Teachers can also receive 18 hours of professional development credit or 6 hours of graduate credit.
Mr. Charles Moore, a mathematics teacher at Horace Mann Middle School in Little Rock, performed research at the Arkansas SBTDC during the 2001 STRIVE program.
Mr. Moore assisted the ASBTDC in developing and administering a training impact survey of recent attendees at ASBTDC Internet and E-Commerce seminars. Mr. Moore aggregated the survey results in a database and wrote a report.
While at the ASBTDC, Mr. Moore attended ASBTDC small business seminars to improve his computer skills and knowledge of small business in Arkansas.
