NIST Announces SBIR Solicitation
by Mildred Holley, Technology Programs Manager

The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) opened its Fiscal Year 2009 SBIR solicitation on November 12. The Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) program seeks small business research projects that address topics described in the announcement. The due date for proposals is 3 p.m. ET on January 22, 2009.

Again this year, NIST has identified Research (R) topics with the objective of stimulating small business innovation in areas that meet the agency's program goals while offering the awardee the potential for commercial opportunities beyond NIST. The agency's Technology Transfer (TT) topics focus on increasing the commercial application of NIST-developed technologies that require further development to see them commercialized. Stated priorities include manufacturing-related innovations and energy efficiency or renewable energy system research and development projects.

NIST funds Phase I projects at amounts up to $90,000 for performance periods up to seven months. The agency estimates it will make about 14 Phase I awards.
