Energy Wants Research Proposals from Arkansas Small Businesses

The U.S. Department of Energy (DoE) released its FY2009 funding opportunity announcement for the Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) and Small Business Technology Transfer (STTR) programs on September 17, 2008. The receipt deadline for Arkansas small businesses who submit Phase I proposals in response to this announcement is 8:00 p.m. EST on November 20, 2008. Proposals must be submitted using the Grants.gov electronic submission system. Applicants must register with Grants.gov, which requires other registrations to complete the process.

The DoE has identified 66 topics across the following 13 program areas. Each topic includes one or more described subtopics.

• Basic Energy Sciences (15 topics)
• Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy (9 topics)
• Fossil Energy (8 topics)
• High Energy Physics (7 topics)
• Biological and Environmental Research (6 topics)
• Nuclear Physics (4 topics)
• Advanced Scientific Computing Research (5 topics)
• Fusion Energy Sciences (3 topics)
• Defense Nuclear Nonproliferation (4 topics)
• Electricity Delivery and Energy Reliability (2 topics)
• Science (1 topic)
• Environmental Management (1 topic)
• Nuclear Energy, Science and Technology (1 topic)

The DoE estimates it will award about 360 fixed price research grants of up to $100,000 and as much as 9 months as a result of this competition. The agency anticipates award selection will occur in April 2009, with Phase I projects to begin by late June 2009.
