Larger SBIR Award Dollars: SBA Wants Your Comments
by Mildred Holley, Technology Programs Manager

The U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) has issued a notice proposing an increase in the dollar limits on Phase I and Phase II award amounts for the Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) program. These dollar caps have remained unchanged since 1992. The notice proposes to increase the Phase I award maximum to $150,000; the Phase II maximum would increase to $1 million. Separate from the current legislative actions on the reauthorization of the program, this action is within the scope of SBA’s oversight of the program. It recognizes that costs to perform research and development are higher than in 1992.

The public comment period is open through September 15, 2008. You can read the full text of the August 15, 2008 Federal Register notice and find instructions on how to submit comments at http://edocket.access.gpo.gov/2008/E8-18914.htm.
