Growing a Knowledge-Based Economy in Arkansas
by Mildred Holley, Technology Programs Manager

On October 2, 2007, Accelerate Arkansas – a volunteer statewide group of community leaders focused on how to move Arkansas forward in the 21st Century economy – announced the five Core Strategies it has adopted to build a knowledge-based economy in the state.

1. Support job-creating research,
2. Develop risk capital available for all business cycle stages,
3. Encourage entrepreneurship and accelerated new enterprise development,
4. Increase Arkansans’ education levels in science, technology, engineering and math,
5. Sustain existing industry through advancing technology and competitiveness.

Accelerate Arkansas’ overarching goal is to see the Arkansas per capita income equal that of the United States average by 2020. As the report states, in 2005 Arkansas ranked 32nd in U.S. population; 33rd in total personal income; and 47th in total personal income per capita. Accelerate Arkansas’ strategic plan outlines 30 recommended actions within its 5 core strategies that it believes are crucial to close the per capita income gap.
