NIH Funding Opportunities
by Douglas Mathew, Graduate Assistant, UALR SBDC

Arkansas entrepreneurs who are interested in the National Institutes of Health’s (NIH) research opportunities should look beyond the regular Omnibus SBIR/STTR Solicitation that NIH releases each January. NIH also offers small businesses the chance to seek research funding through Program Announcements (PA) and Requests for Application (RFA).

The PA is focused on topics in areas of increased priority for a specific area of science. PA’s are active for three years from date of release unless the specific expiration date indicates otherwise. Examples of some current SBIR/STTR topics included in PA’s are:

• Development of Diagnostic Screening Test for Salt Sensitivity
• Novel Technologies for In Vivo Imaging
• Technology and Aging: NIA STTR Program Initiative
• Integration of Heterogeneous Data Sources.

The RFA is focused on topics that are more narrowly defined for which one or more NIH institutes have set aside funds for awarding grants. These RFA’s typically have a single due date for the submission of an application. Examples of SBIR/STTR topics currently open under an RFA are:

• Research to Develop New Therapeutics and Monitoring Technologies for Type 1 Diabetes and its Complications
• Technological Enhancements and Archiving for Surveys of the Elderly
• Bioengineering Approaches to Energy Balance and Obesity.

Some PA’s and RFA’s are restricted to small businesses only because they use the SBIR/STTR selection criteria. Others are intended for a broader range of participants so it is important to check the types of organizations that are eligible to submit a proposal for a specific PA or RFA. The details of the program and topics can be downloaded from http://grants2.nih.gov/grants/oer.htm.

Arkansas entrepreneurs and researchers interested in learning more about these or other NIH funding opportunities are invited to contact Mildred Holley at mxholley@ualr.edu, 501.324.9043 or 800.862.2040.
