Employee Morale: What Do Your Employees Really Want?
by Laura Miller, Business Consultant, ASU SBDC

Low employee morale can be devastating to your business. It can result in poor customer service and employee turnover. In order to retain the best employees, you must pay a competitive wage (because money pays the bills!). But is that enough? What do your employees really want?

Employees want:
•opportunity for growth and development: Provide opportunities to attend training, professional meetings, or civic events.
•inclusion: Provide relevant information on a timely basis, allow them to participate in meetings, to provide input for decisions, and to set their own goals.
•leadership: Provide clear expectations with outcomes and provide feedback as they work towards goals.
•recognition: Express your appreciation through simple gestures such as saying “please” and “thank you” or small rewards like treating the staff to lunch.

December 12-18 is “Tell Someone They’re Doing a Good Job” week. Make it a point to tell your employees they are doing a good job every day this week. Turning this gesture a habit will be the first step in improving employee morale.
