DOE's Inventions and Innovation Program
by Douglas Mathew, Graduate Assistant, UALR SBDC

The U.S Department of Energy (DOE) invites small businesses and individuals to apply for its Inventions and Innovation Program (I&I). The I&I program provides grants to fund development of energy saving technologies. The DOE requires pre-applications; the deadline is 5:00 PM ET on October 11, 2005. Full applications submitted in response to this agency solicitation are due no later than 5:00 PM ET on January 31, 2006.

The I&I program awards financial and technical support to projects that reduce energy consumption and have future commercial markets. DOE will accept applications for technologies in the conceptual (Category 1) and developmental (Category 2) stages of development.

Only individuals and small businesses are eligible for this grant. The DOE estimates a total amount of $2 million for applications funded under this initiative. The agency estimates it will make 10 awards. The award amount varies from $25,000 to $250,000 depending on the category and development phase of the project. The projects under category 1 will have a project period of one year and category 2 will have a time period of two years. The anticipated start date for awards is May 31, 2006.

Small businesses and individuals who are interested in applying are encouraged to complete a self-assessment before submitting a pre-application. More information about the I&I program, including the self-assessment can be found at http://www.eere.energy.gov/inventions.

Arkansas entrepreneurs and researchers interested in learning more about this or other DOE opportunities are invited to contact Mildred Holley at mxholley@ualr.edu, 501.324.9043 or 800.862.2040.
