Business Licensure – Part I: Licensed Occupations
by Betsey Martin, Information Specialist, UALR Lead Center
Many small business owners must hold an occupational license in Arkansas. Although some professions requiring special licensure are clear, such as physicians, other occupations are not so obvious. For example, employment agents are required to contact the AR Dept. of Labor, pass an examination, pay an annual fee and file a $5,000 bond.
Failure to meet occupational licensing requirements can lead to business closure, fines and other penalties.
The “Directory of Licensed Occupations” provides all of the licensing requirements required by Arkansas state statutes and carried out by various state licensing authorities, boards and commissions. This directory, which is published every other year by the AR Dept. of Employment Security, is the only single source of occupational licensing information in Arkansas. Highlights of the latest edition include:
- Job title and a brief job description
- Required examinations, fees and other requirements
- The licensing authority’s name, address and contact information
- The information in this directory may be viewed on-line at

"Business Licensure Part II: City Business Permits" will be featured in the next BizBytes.
