Guy's Barbeque
Guy David & Mary Scarborough, Owners
Yorktown, Arkansas

With his love of cooking and desire to work near home and family, Guy David Scarborough decided to start a restaurant and custom cooking business. He attended Starting a Business in Arkansas as part of the state's annual Arkansas Entrepreneur Day. This was the first seminar presented at the new Great Rivers Technical Institute Small Business Development Center in Dumas. Kathryn Peacock, Center Director of the GRTI SBDC, assisted Scarborough in developing a business plan with financial projections. When Pine Bluff National Bank approved a loan subject to obtaining a SBA guaranty, Peacock also assisted in prepring his LowDoc application. Scarborough prepared further by attending the recommended IRS Tax Workshop for Small Businesses.

Guy's Barbeque opened in Yorktown in June 2002, serving barbeque, catfish, and weekday plate lunches. Guy and Mary Scarborough's motto is "We're Smokin' to Please!" By capitalizing on the needs of local farmers and heavily traveled Highway 425, Guy's Barbeque revitalized a vacant building and created five jobs at the heart of a rural community of 500 people.
