Sources of Specialty Expertise for Arkansas Small Businesses

On occasion, innovation-focused entrepreneurs may need specialized expertise to fully meet opportunities and challenges in their business pursuits. Some entrepreneurs wish to hire expertise to guide their management decisions. The ASBDC provides the following list of public and private sector sources as a service to our web visitors. The ASBDC does not offer an endorsement of any service provider. Instead, our intent is to offer resources for further investigation and evaluation by the user.


Arkansas Small Business Development Center (ASBDC)

The ASBDC supports innovation-based entrepreneurs in Arkansas through a variety of services and advice, including:

  • Business plan reviews
  • New product development and commercialization
  • SBIR/STTR participation and proposal development
  • Alternative capital sources and their processes
  • Access to Federal R & D
  • Guidance on intellectual property considerations

Arkansas Science & Technology Authority (ASTA)

ASTA is a state agency that operates a number of programs and provides resources to businesses, researchers, educators and others. Resources for businesses include the Technology Transfer Assistance Grant (TTAG) Program, the Technology Development Program and the Seed Capital Investment Program. ASTA also approves or manages various state incentives targeted to innovation-based businesses engaged in research and development. Visit www.asta.arkansas.gov for more details.

Arkansas Economic Development Commission (AEDC)

AEDC serves technology entrepreneurs through its Business Development division. A variety of incentives are available. To learn about specific assistance and incentives, contact ADED or visit their website at www.1800arkansas.com.

Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) Small Business Technology Transer (STTR)

Several private sector consultants provide SBIR and STTR technical and cost proposal preparation assistance and advice for innovation-capable small businesses. Those service providers listed below are known within the SBIR/STTR community and have been speakers at several national or regional SBIR conferences.

Intellectual Property Protection

Arkansas Inventor's Network

This network promotes product invention, new ideas, and innovation across Arkansas. Its goal is to help inventors and entrepreneurs find resources and assistance to evaluate, produce and market their viable product ideas and innovations. Visit www.arkansasinvents.org for more details.

Arkansas Patent Attorneys and Agents

Technology entrepreneurs and inventors may want or need professional advice regarding the protection of intellectual property they create. The ASBDC maintains a list of registered patent attorneys and patent agents in Arkansas. In 2006, the ASBDC contacted registered attorneys and agents in Arkansas to identify other degrees they hold. The ASBDC added this information from any attorney or agent that responded to our information request. Engineering Services

Technology entrepreneurs and inventors seeking engineering and fabrication help to develop drawings, make prototypes or get other engineering-related advice may turn to private sector engineering services. Some higher education institutions may also serve the community for a fee.
